Successful people don’t always have the right answers. But they often ask the right questions.
Before the year ends, take time to reflect.
These five simple questions will help you understand and appreciate the past. They can also clarify your vision for the future, cement your goals, and spark ideas on how to make 2018 the best year ever.
1) What were your highlights from 2017?
What were your best moments and accomplishments? What do you feel most fortunate about? Who were you with, and who helped you along the way?
Use this question to take stock of the past year and cultivate gratitude for the positive things which occurred.
2) What were your biggest lessons from 2017?
Life teaches when we are ready to learn. But if we aren’t paying attention, the learning process is more painful than necessary. Take a moment to reflect on your lessons from 2017. How will you approach common situations differently in the new year?
3) What are you most excited for in 2018?
Moving forward, what possibilities enliven you the most? What are you looking forward to?
4) What are your goals for 2018?
It’s easy to get excited about making a change on January 1st. But new year’s resolutions rarely last longer than a week or two.
Change doesn’t typically occur overnight. A better method is to set long-term goals.
Considering all the different aspects of your life, what do you want to achieve by the end of 2018?
5) What type of person must you become to achieve those goals?
Achievements are often based on identity. For example, if you want to be in great shape, you must be the type of person who eats right and exercises regularly.
Look closely at your goals for next year. For each one, think about the person you must become in order to succeed. Make it personal. Start each answer with, “I’m the type of person that…..”
Moving into the new year, don’t forget your goals. Look at them often, appraise your progress, and determine whether your actions align with your desired outcomes.
After answering these five questions, you will be off to a great start on January 1st. If you have other inspiring or clarifying questions, drop them in the comments
See ya next year!
